Philippines people are also known as Filipinos, with Filipina as the term used for the women. During the era of Spanish colony, Filipino refers to the Spaniards who are born within the country. In the middle and late 19th century, the term is used for the indigenous people of the Philippines. Recently, it signifies the citizenship and nationality of an individual who is born in the country. Whether the parents are of foreign descent, the infant is automatically considered as a Filipino citizen.
On the other hand, the colloquial term for the Filipino people is Pinoy for the men, while the women are called as Pinay. Before anyone else has arrived to explore the country thousands of years ago, there have been pre-existing Philippines people. These aboriginal inhabitants are called as the Negritos. Their descendants, the Aetas, comprise a small percentage of the current total population of the country.
Before the Spaniards arrived to the archipelago, the Philippines people have been separated into tribal groups or barangays. Some of these groups have their own culture, tradition, and caste system. For some tribes, the highest status within the society is the maharlika (leader), while the lowest is the alipin (slave). The most common tradition among these groups is the arranged marriage of the young men and women. Furthermore, they are not allowed to marry someone outside their status. This tradition is a little similar to the caste systems of some countries, and the royal families of European nations.
The Philippines people follow a culture which is influenced by a handful other cultures from various countries from the west and the east. On the other hand, the traditions and customs of the Filipino people are based mostly on their Catholic faith. This is due to the legacy which the Spaniards brought with them during the time of their colonization. Unlike the people from its neighboring countries, most of the Filipino population is made up of Roman Catholics. There are over 111 local languages which the Philippines people speak. The two most common dialects are Tagalog and English, which are both taught in schools as among the major curriculums. Other well known languages are: Ilocano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Cebuano, and Chabacano. The Filipinos started visiting American nations during the era of Spanish colony. During this time, a lot of Filipino men man ships which sail off to the ~{!0~}New World~{!1~}. After their arrival, there are some who stayed for good and married foreign women. The migration of the Filipino people to the United States started in the middle of the 1800. During the year 1903, the children of rich families go abroad to study in universities and colleges. In 1906, Philippines people migrate to work in farms, plantations, and other industries. After the era of the Second World War, a lot of nurses and health care employees also migrated. On the other hand, several Filipino women married military men from the U.S.; and left the Philippines. Aside from the United States, there are also a lot of Filipinos leaving the country to find better job opportunities in Canada, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and other countries.
